North Carolina ESA+ for homeschool families

Education savings account · North Carolina · 2026-27 · checked Oct 12, 2026 against 6 sources · General information, not legal or financial advice.

Your North Carolina ESA+ to-do

  1. Check that your child qualifies
For students with a disability who need special education services. A child may be home-schooled: the parent registers the home school with the NC Division of Non-Public Education (children 7-16) and emails the home school ID to ESA@ncseaa.edu. ESA+ cannot pay tuition for a home school; the funds go to allowable expenses such as curriculum, tutoring, therapy and technology.
  2. New-student priority application for 2026-27 (closed)
Feb 2 - Mar 2, 2026 at 5 p.m. Complete applications go into a lottery; later applications are considered in order if funds remain.
  3. Renew for next school year
    March-April each year, in MyPortal.
  4. Spend at least $500 on core academics
Each school year, to remain eligible and renew.
  5. Update disability documentation
Every 3 years from the date of the IEP Eligibility Determination.

Renewal
Yearly renewal in MyPortal (March-April) so NCSEAA knows the student continues. To stay eligible and renew, spend at least $500 per student per school year on core subjects (math, science, English/language arts, social studies) through tuition, core curriculum, core tutoring, standardized testing materials or core textbooks. Disability documentation must be updated every 3 years.
2026-27 changes (June-August 2026): art and music tutoring added as "Tutoring: Other" (does not count toward the $500 academic spending requirement); the $500 core academic spending rule clarified; curriculum kits, document cameras, video magnifiers and sensory items clarified.
Co-enrollment: home school plus private school = regular award; private school plus public school = 50% of the award. Full-time public school students (including charter) cannot use ESA+.
Parents of students in a nonpublic (private or home) school full time sign a Release of Public School Services (LEA Release).
The program pages on k12.ncseaa.edu and the statute on ncleg.gov block automated readers, so the 2026-27 award amounts, deadlines and any budget changes (July 2026) need a manual check.
