Your Illinois education expense credit to-do
- Check that your child qualifies
A home school counts as an Illinois private school when it meets the compulsory attendance (truancy) law, so a parent or guardian of a full-time home-schooled K-12 student under 21 can claim it. Both parent and child must be Illinois residents when the expenses are paid. On the worksheet the school is written as "home school" with type "H". - Claim on the 2025 Illinois return
With the 2025 Form IL-1040, due April 15, 2026 (extended filing due date October 15, 2026). Only expenses paid during calendar year 2025 count.

payment_mode "reimbursement" here means the family pays first and gets part back through a lower Illinois income tax; the credit is part of Schedule ICR's total nonrefundable credit.
The $750 cap is per family (per return), not per child: in Homepen put it on one kid's program or split it yourself.
The Schedule ICR instructions point home schools to Publication 119, but on the Department's site Publication 119 is now about Schedule NR; the home-school rules are in Publication 112 (R-04/24).
